This 10-minute routine will increase your memory and creativity

This 10-minute routine will increase your memory and creativityThis 10-minute routine will increase your memory and creativityMemory and imagination are inextricably connected. In fact, your memory is imagined. Its not concrete nor objective fact. But rather, your memory is how you stored, connected, and interpreted a person, place, or thing.Your memory gets better as you become mora imaginative. Very few people have learned how to utilize their long-term memory. And because many people have poor memory strategies they are ineffective learners, they lack creativity, and they lack confidence in themselves. If you cant remember something, you didnt learn it.Once you become powerful at maximizing your memory, your learning goes from the conscious to the subconscious level much quicker. Once learning becomes subconscious, you have more control and ownership of it.When something becomes subconscious, you can then use it to create a more powerful physical reality. As Napoleon Hill said, The subconscious mind will translate into its physical equivalent, by the most direct and practical method available.Again, memory is all about imagination. You cant remember something if you dont connect it to something else. All learning is simply association - connecting what you currently know with something you dont yet know.In this short post, youll learn a simply yet effective strategy forincreasing your memory and imaginationwhich will allow you to direct your subconscious mind more effectivelyin order to create the outcomes you binnenseek (and also create some beyond what you seek)Heres a simple routine to get startedTen minutes before going to sleepAll of the information that you have ever encountered is contained within your subconscious mind. The subconscious mind never forgets anything. - Taryn CrimiIts common practice for many of the worlds most successful people to intentionally direct the workings of their subconscious mind while theyre sleeping. For example, Thomas Edi son would take time every night, just before bed, to prepare his subconscious mind to chew on, twist, organize, and create powerful solutions to his creative problems. He welches very conscious about this process. As he said, Never go to sleep without a request to your subconscious.Edison welches a memory machine. He was a voracious reader and he remembered practically everything he read. He was able to remember nearly everything he read because he understood the interplay between memory, imagination, and the subconscious mind.Because he understood the connection between memory and creativity - both of which are simply connecting things - he was able to become one of the worlds most important inventors. His imagination and ability to make new connections was explosive. You cant be truly creative without having a powerful memory. And you cant have a powerful memory without becoming creative. The two go hand-in-hand.How does this work?Firstly, memory is not about willpower. Willpower is a linear and brutish approach to accomplishing something. Imagination and creativity are far more powerful methods, which are also non-linear and can stretch in many different ways.In his book, Unlimited Memory, Kevin Horsley said, Emile Coue pointed out that, When the imagination and the will are in conflict, the imagination always wins. If you will yourself to remember, and your imagination is not on the task, you will have zero zurckhalten and recall. Your imagination is the place of all your memory power. The healthiest memories are flexible, not fixed. You can change them, alter them, manipulate, and expand them. The more imaginative you are in attempting to remember something, the easier it is to remember.Heres an exampleLets say youre trying to remember something from a book youve readAll you need to do is connect the idea or concept to something relevant in your lifeYou want to turn it into a visualThe more of your senses you can connect to the experience, the deeper engra ined it can go into your long-term memoryOnce in your long-term memory, it becomes subconscious, and thus far more powerful than something you have to consciously focus onWhen something becomes unconscious, it begins connecting itself to other areas of your brain, other ideas, and other memoriesEvery time you recall a memory, your whole brain fires and wires new connections together. So what was Thomas Edison doing a few minutes before he went to bed at night? He was visualizing. He was connecting all of the ideas he was reading with other experiences and memories from his past. His memory was powerful because he was extremely imaginative about the process. The more imaginative and creative you get about remembering something, the more subconscious that memories becomes. Consequently, you dont want to place any limitations on how you connect ideas. You can even get a little weird about it.Research has found that play is extremely good for neuroplasticity, which is the brains ability t o reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. Play, then, is also very good for memory. As an example of making something imaginativeLets say youre trying to remember how memory, imagination, and the subconscious mind work togetherYou could think of your memory as a giant floating blob - what specifically reminds you of giant floating blobs? The first thing that comes to my mind is the Pokmon, GastlyYou then connect that with imagination - which reminds me of unicornsSo immediately Im imagining the Pokmon Gastly riding on top of a unicornYou then connect memory and imagination with the idea of the subconscious mind - which reminds me of the book, Think and Grow RichSo now Ive got Gastly reading a copy of Think and Grow Rich while riding on top of a unicornTo make the experience even more immersive, you could tap into all of your senses, such as smell, taste, and anflug - so in this case, Gastly smells like something strange from a chemistry lab and the un icorn smells like a bowl of Lucky Charms also, when they ride by you can feel Gastlys smoke, which feels like a thick-moist mist and you can actually taste Lucky CharmsCreativity is all about connecting things together. So inevitably, Thomas Edison was probably thinking in a highly imaginative way about various ideas and trying to connect them together. He gave himself a few minutes to do this before going to sleep, then hed pass out. While he was sleeping, his subconscious mind started connecting, organizing, synthesizing, shaping, and creating.Ten minutes after waking upResearch confirms the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex, is most active and readily creative immediately following sleep. Conversely, the analytical parts of the brain become more active as the day goes on. The study looked at morning and evening MRI scans and observed that mornings showed more connections in the brain - a key element to the creative process.Your subconscious mind has been loosely mind-wand ering while you slept, making contextual and zeitlich connections. Thus, your brain and mind are primed for creation and learning.Edison certainly woke up early and even wrote in his journal first thing in the morning. He spent his morning in creative activity. Over 3,500 notebooks of Edisons have been found. The notebooks are filled with interesting observations and insights - many pertaining to unrelated projects, in a flow of associations and connections. Consecutive sketches - some rough and others executed with precision- traverse a vast spectrum of technologies and inventions. In other words, Edison often journaled in the morning in a stream-of-consciousness manner. He would allow his mind to connect seemingly unrelated ideas together and in due process would often come up with inspired and creative connections. For example, in one journal entry he was predicting ideas related to potential flight (decades before the Wright Brothers success) and then getting ah-has related to h is work on the telephone.Heres how his journal entry began, dated May 26, 1877DiscoveryIf you look very closely at any printed matter so that the print is greatly blurred and you see double images of the type . . . one of the double images is always blue or ultra violet=Glorious= Telephone perfected this morning 5 AM.- - - In an interview with Tim Ferriss, Josh Waitzkin, former chess prodigy and tai chi world champion, explains his morning routine to tap into the subconscious breakthroughs and connections experienced while he was sleeping.Unlike 80 percent of people between the ages of 1844 who check their smartphones within 15 minutes of waking up, Waitzkin goes to a quiet place, does some meditation and grabs his journal. In his journal, he thought-dumps for several minutes. Thus, rather than focusing on input like most people who check their notifications, Waitzkins focus is on output. This is how he taps into his higher realms of clarity, learning, and creativity - what he cal ls, crystallized intelligence.ConclusionThe possibilities of creative effort connected with the subconscious mind are stupendous and imponderable. They inspire one with awe. - Napoleon HillPulling all of this togetherSpend lots of time learning and readingThe more methodologies to your learning the better - experiential learning and context-based learning are often more powerful than simply readingAs you learn, try to connect what youre learning in an imaginative way with something you already knowHave tangible goals youre working toward and problems youre trying to solve - as Darren Hardy once said, Your life can be measured in proportion to the size of problems youre trying to solve.Spend a few minutes just before bed visualizing the ideas, concepts, challenges, experiences, of what youre trying to accomplish - also visualize the completion of your project or attainment of your goalWhile you sleep, your subconscious mind will have something powerful and potent to work with, sin ce youve creating many different connections throughout your brain related to whatever it is youre thinking aboutWhen you wake up first thing in the morning, drink a huge glass of water, go to a quiet place, and start writing in your journal in a stream-of-consciousness mannerOnce you start getting creative ideas, keep writing - its usually the idea after the idea that really mattersAll of this is related to what psychologists call epiphany ability, which is something you can master throughout your life, just like memory and creativity. The scientific definition of an epiphany consists of 3 crucial elementsabandoning the old ineffective thoughts (i.e. breaking mental fixation)formulating the new and effective thoughts (forming the new novel associations)experiencing the intense thrilling feeling of AhaYou can become very good at getting epiphanies or creative break-throughs. Youll need to be open to new experiences, though. Which apparently is quite rare. Research shows that people become less and less open to new experiences as they age.Youll need to develop a powerful memory and imagination strategy. Youll need to become more playful and free about how you learn and remember things.Your memory is not objective, its subjective. Memory is created and re-created every time it is recalled and associated with something new. Healthy memories are flexible.Because your memory is flexible and highly imaginative, you have far more creative control into who you become than you probably think you do.You can become a powerful creative thinker. You can become extremely intelligent. You can become productive and prolific. You can quickly develop expertise in difficult areas. The question is will you take the time and learn the skills? Or will you let the invaluable tool of your mind and memory go to waste?Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. Interview Questions and the Best Answers [2019]

vorstellungsgesprch Questions and the Best Answers 2019bewerberbewerbungsinterview Questions and the Best Answers bewerbungsgesprch Questions and Answers Congratulations Your resume is outstanding and your cover letter is a hit. You got a response from a recruiter, and the company wants you to come in for an bewerbungsgesprch. Now what?Landing a job interview can seem like a battle in itself. Getting selected to meet with the organization in person feels validating, but it can also be scary. Now you have to live up to the expectation you set through your resume and cover letter.Dont let the thought of having to answer a series of job interview questions get you worried. This guide will help get you ready. Well go overWhat to expect from a job interviewCommon interview questions you will be askedHow to answer interview questionsSample interview questions and answersAdditional job interview preparationWhat to Expect From a Job InterviewThe first thing you need to know is that there ar e different styles of job interviews, which makes it tough to know exactly the types of interview questions to prepare for. However, as a general rule, job interviews can fall under three categoriestraditional, behavior-based and a mix of both.Traditional Interview FormatThis style of interview has a free-flowing question and answer format. Here an interviewer will ask you a series of questions related to job requirements. The goal is to have you expand on what you provided in your resume and cover letter.Behavior-Based Interview FormatThis is a very popular interview style because it provides companies deeper insight into how you behave and apply certain skills in different situations. Typical interview questions are very open-ended, get you to describe past experiences and can lead to a variety of responses.Mixed Interview FormatMixed Interview Format As you might have guessed, this type of interview mixes both traditional and behavior-based formats.Your best bet for preparing for an interview is to develop and rehearse answers to interview questions following a mixed interview format. That way you are ready for whatever gets thrown at you.Common Interview QuestionsYoull never be able to predict exactly the questions you will be asked in an interview. But you can expect the interview to follow a line of questioning related to the job requirements listed in job posting. For example, if the job description states that the role demands strong written communication skills, you will probably be asked a question related to this skill.Instead of asking specific questions related to each job requirement, interviewers might also ask mora general questions. These can be more simple, with the goal of having you summarize your motivations and qualifications. Here are some of the top interview questions that recruiters ask in both traditional and behavior-based interviews.Traditional Interview QuestionsWhy would you like to work here? Why should we choose you?Tell me about yourself. Why should we hire you?Where do you see yourself in five years? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? How do you handle stress?Behavioral Interview QuestionsDescribe an example of a time when you had competing deadlines and how you resolved the situation.Have you ever had a conflict with a co-worker, and how did you resolve it?Give me an example of how you overcame ambiguity on a particular project.Describe a situation where you made a mistake and how you went about correcting it. (see sample answer below)Provide an example of a time when you went above and beyond what was expected of you for a particular project. How to Answer Interview QuestionsThe sample interview questions above do not have definitive right answers. You will have to relate your personal experiences to each question. The best interview answers are ones that address the questions directly and provide sufficient detail to support your answer without becoming unfocused. For behavioral interview ans wers, you should follow a specific response format called STAR, which stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Remember that the questions are meant to tease out certain behavioral qualities from you, so you want to do this in a coherent way that allows the interviewer to get a complete picture of the example to which you refer.Situation Describe the situation or context (project, company, your role, etc.).Task What were you asked to do or how were you involved in the situation?Action Describe the action you took to complete the task or solve the schwierigkeit. Results Explain the outcome of your actions. If the task was completed or a schwierigkeit was solved, how did this benefit the company or work relationships? Be as specific as possible.Sample Interview Questions and AnswersQuestion Describe a situation where you made a mistake and how you went about correcting it. (Behavioral interview)AnswerIn my last job working as an event organizer, I was involved in the planning of a l arge full-day conference for two hundred people at the gasthof. My specific task was to coordinate the food and beverage offering for attendees, which included breakfast and lunch services. This meant selecting the food to be provided based on the hotels catering options while accommodating any dietary requirements of attendees.Unfortunately, I miscommunicated the number of vegetarian options that were required when placing the order with the hotel. So, when our guests sat down for their lunch, there were a handful of people who did not receive a plate.Upon being alerted by a hotel staff member of the problem, I immediately realized my error. So the first thing I did was speak to the kitchen staff about whether they could develop more vegetarian meals even if they werent part of the original catering menu. Luckily, the kitchen staff was very accommodating and managed to put together some plates of food. After working on a solution with the kitchen, I informed my manager that I had mad e a mistake but that I had already taken action to correct it. She was supportive of my action, and I then went to the five guests who were affected by the mishap to confirm that they wouldnt mind eating something that was not on the original menu. They were all fine with the change, so despite a short delay in getting them their food, they were all satisfied with the result. The lesson I took from this is that with every event involving food I now have a spreadsheet for dietary requirements that I use to confirm meals multiple times before an event.Explanation This example demonstrates the STAR method in action. The respondent outlines the situation and task related to a particular conference, and the problem that arose out of it. Specific actions are then outlined to provide insight into how the interviewee acknowledges and manages a mistake. Finally, the result of the action is described to demonstrate that the action resolved the problem and that a lesson has been learned from th e experience.Question Why would you like to work here? (traditional interview)Good answer The reason I would like to work here is that I know it is a place where I can bring valuable skills and knowledge in digital marketing to the existing team, while also challenging myself and learning from those around me. I am particularly interested in the collaborative work environment and the opportunity to work with a variety of people with different specialties.Bad answer I want to work here because the company has a reputation for being one of the best in the industry, and I am ready to work for one the big players.Explanation The first answer is good because it does not only focus on what the interviewee stands to gain from working at the company. Instead, it stresses that the individual has something to offer the company (digital marketing expertise) while also expressing interest in how the company culture can help support the individuals professional development.Meanwhile, the second answer is solely focused on what the respondent has to gain, and it does not even provide specific detail about the types of skills or knowledge the individual seeks to obtain.Question What are your weaknesses? (traditional interview)Good answer One of the areas that I am really trying to improve upon is public speaking. It is something that I never did much of during university and the first couple years of my career as an accountant. However, as I have advanced into more senior roles, I have realized how important it is to speak to larger audiences both inside and outside of my company. To help make me feel more comfortable in these situations, I took a seminar in presentation skills.Bad answers I tend to procrastinate/I work too much/I have a hard time letting going of projects.Explanation This is one of those hard interview questions. It should be answered strategically. The first thing to avoid is highlighting an area of weakness that you know a core requirement of the job. For example, if the job description says that you need to be able to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines at once, you want to avoid stating that one of your weaknesses is procrastination. You also want to avoid being vague since this allows the interviewer to develop his/her own conceptions. The best way to answer this question is to turn a negative into a positive. As you can see in the first example, the respondent acknowledges room for improvement in a particular area (ideally not critical to the job function) and demonstrates the steps he/she is taking to improve.Recap for Answering Interview QuestionsDOsDO take time to reflect on the questions being asked before answering ask for clarification if needed.DO provide specifics use examples to back up your claims relating to your skills.DO use the STAR (situation, task, action, result) for behavioral questions. DONTs DONT highlight weaknesses in areas that might be considered essential to the job.DONT be negative towards others w hen speaking about conflicts or dislikes in past jobs.DONT focus only on yourself instead connect your skills and experiences to the companys projects and workplace culture.Additional Interview Preparation TipsThere are several addition activities that can help with your interview prep. Some will help you develop answers to specific questions, while others will simply reinforce a good first impression.Review your cover letter and resume Its important for you to keep in mind what the company already knows about you. That way you can reference the contents of your application to support your interview answers. Bringing copies of both your resume and cover letter to the actual interview is also advised.Update My Resume NowConsider doing a mock interview If you are new to the process or uncomfortable with interviewing, answering mock interview questions is a good way of overcoming your nervousness and getting you trained. Many universities and career centres have programs where peopl e can sign up to have real recruiters conduct a mock interview so that people can practice.Have your own questions to ask at an interview The job interview is also an opportunity for you to learn more about the company and the role you are considering. You also want to convey a strong interest in the position to the recruiter. Knowing what questions to ask in an interview can help you accomplish both.Summing upThe best interview answers start with the right interview preparation. You will never be able to predict exactly what you will be asked, but knowing the types of questions to expect and knowing how to articulate your answers in a structured fashion will give you a great chance of success.

Diet and Training Made Amelia Boone an Endurance Athlete

Diet and Training Made Amelia Boone an Endurance AthleteDiet and Training Made Amelia Boone an Endurance AthleteAmelia Boone is an athlete of the first order, competing at the elite level in endurance races, CrossFit, ultra-running and obstacle course racing (texterkennung). These fittest-of-the-fit sports have been growing rapidly in popularity, drawing larger purses and endorsements from corporate sponsors. Amelia has been an early icon. I spoke with Amelia about herbei philosophy of dual-tracking a business career with being a pro athlete. When shes not winning top prizes, she works as a corporate attorney for Applein its HQ. Yes, she manages to train and compete at a high level while maintaining a full-time job in a challenging field. Quick Stats 2013 Spartan Race World ChampionThree-time winner of the 24-hour Worlds Toughest MudderGolden ticket winner out of the Sean OBrien 100k, giving her entry into the vaunted Western States endurance runThree-time finisher of the Death R ace, a grueling 30-hour course through brutal terrain in sub-freezing temperatures with unknown obstacles and no predetermined end timeNumerous podium finishes in a long list of grinding competitions Amelia Boone is a relentless achiever. She can deadlift nearly double her body weight and push-press her body weight overhead. For those of you who dont lift, thats impressive strength. Amelia has been featured in Newsweek and on CNBC with Carl Quintanilla in a special about extreme sports. She has earned the right to a large measure of swagger, yet the first thing that strikes you about Amelia is her humility. The Role of Nutrition in Her Success Nutrition is important, but I am by no means very rigid or dogmatic about it. With the amount of activity I do, I want to make sure Im feeding my body correctly. I take in good, quality calories but Im not obsessive about it. Experimenting with Nutrition I have tried to go fat-adapted, which means low-carb, and they say for long distan ces, it prevents the bonk from carb depletion since youre burning fat. I tried but eventually abandoned it. Ive experimented with things, but Ive gotten into a good balance now moderate carbs/fat and hi-protein. Rest Days a Routine or an Instinctive Choice? I try to have one day a week as a rest day, but its not scheduled. Its based around what the training looks like for the week. Its hard for me to do completely nothing, so my rest day will include stretching, mobility, foam-rolling, and a nice walk around the neighborhood. Especially as I get older, I realize the importance of rest. Whether Threshold Levels Exist for OCR at the Elite Level Not officially, but weve all kind of opined on it, like, Whats the ideal mix for an obstacle course racer? Do you have to be able to run a sub 530 mile or be able to lift x amount? But I think the beauty of this sport is you dont. There are no gating factors or thresholds such as minimums for the Olympic trials, where women have to run a sub 24500 marathon. Because OCR is so full-body, its not standardized and no two courses are alike, so I think thats what attracted me to it. One big factor is you have to be able to control and hold your own body weight to climb walls or pull yourself through a rig of hanging rings. So its a harder metric to quantify than absolute strength. How Pressures of External Expectations Can Affect the Way You Look at a Race I struggled with this. It started as, Hey, Im good at this and people are noticing. That was kind of fun, but then people started expecting me to be at the top, and the clich of, Its hard to get to the top and even harder to stay there came true for me. I felt as if I had a target on my back, and for a year ortwo, it was hard to find the fun in it. I got stressed out before every race, and it was no longer an outlet. I was living up to others expectations. Mentally I went through a shift, where I decided to go out there and kick some ass and see what happens. Eve ryone expected her to win Spartan Race 2015, and when she came in fourth, she felt as though she had to apologize to people. She realized life goes on and people werent disappointed in her. That awareness became freeing for her. The confidence developed as an attorney and as a champion support one another. The lessons go both ways. If Ive had a tough work situation, I learn composure. I can use that on a course when things dont go my way. Theres nothing in this moment that cant be fixed. Lets scan everything, re-frame and readjust. Amelia is a proponent of EQ (emotional intelligence), which she believes is much more useful than IQ. It helps on race days when she can get a sense, particularly from people against whom shes raced before, of who looks in a good place and will likely perform well that day. It is, by far, a better gauge of your success in life than absolute intelligence. Advice for Teenage Girls Whats her advice forteenagegirls to achieve professional success while re maining happy and healthy? For me, its realizingthat you have to play the long game. Youre not going to be able to have everything all at once. Incollege, I gave up athletics to focus on my studies. Sometimes you need to focus on one part of your life, get that in order and then move on to the next part. Especially for young women- tune out the noise, the social media, the negative stereotypes and things people say that just dont matter. Its hard to do, but nothing good comes from listening to these things. A Moment of Revelation After winning the Spartan Race World Championship in 2013, I went down and sat in the lake, and I looked around and said, This is going to change everything. Soon after I signed with Reebok. I keep those moments tucked away because theyre really cool to reflect on. Her parting thought Its important to me to not frame things in terms of successes and failures but to frame them in terms of experiences and lessons. 6 Things to Consider When Defining Your Ideal Career Path

6 Things to Consider When Defining Your Ideal Career Path 6 Things to Consider When Defining Your Ideal Career Path Whether youre new to the workforce or considering making a career change, its important to have a clear career path in mind.Unfortunately, that isnt always easy. Especially during the earliest stages of our careers, we tend to make decisions based on what influencers like our family and friends tell us or by gut feeling. Perhaps this is whythe average college student changes their majorthree times during their college career. To avoid future confusion and frustration, you may want to consider the following six things when defining your ideal career path1. Define Your PassionUnderstanding what motivates you is the first step in defining your ideal career path. Your passion does bedrngnis necessarily have to be a specific job or industry. Your motivation can be something like helping others or feeling good about yourself, and you can explore many paths to fulfill these d esires. If you follow a career path that satisfies you, you will be a more competent professional who delivers better outcomes.2. Experience Is the Best TeacherWhen youre starting your first career or jumping into a new one, it can be difficult to identify your natural skills, especially those on which you can capitalize. Youll need to give yourself some time to explore your skills and understand your potential. After gaining some experience, you will be in a better position to identify your strengths and leverage your talent for success.3. Think in Terms of Career Opportunities Instead of Particular JobsIt is a common mistake to make decisions based on what is happening in the moment. What you need right now may not be aligned with what you want in the long term. For instance, quickly accepting a promotion because of the higher compensation may not be the best option if the new role doesnt lead to the career track you want to follow. Having very clear career goals will turn your dai ly decisions into small steps towards your ideal career path. That being said, you should approach opportunities in terms of where you want to be in the next five or eight years. You do not need to commit forever.4. Culture MattersWhen defining your ideal career, be sure to consider the company culture. The work environment, your coworkers, and the company leadership can all contribute to how much or how little you enjoy a job. No matter how well a role seems to align with your career goals,it may not be smart to take the role if the culture isnt right for you.For instance, big corporations and small startups operate in very different ways. Some people thrive more in one than the other.5.Money Cant Be EverythingAt the end of the day, we all have to pay the bills. However, money should not always be the primary factor in determining your next career step. Making decisions based on money alone can be a big mistake. According to Forbes contributor Rick Smith, no matter how much money we have, we always wish we had at least 20 percent more.Instead of focusing on money, think about what genuinely matters to you. Do you value flexible hours? A more enjoyable lifestyle? If no amount of money will ever be enough, then its much smarter to make choices based on wishes you can fulfill.6. Look to the FutureFinally, be sure to consider the future of the profession to which you may be drawn. In our age of rapid technological advances, the world of work is changing constantly. Will your dream job change soon - or even worse, will it be eliminated? To identify a profession with potential, look at current trends in the industry. If possible, talk to people operating in the field. They may be able to tell youhow your chosen career is likely to change in the future.Maria Onzain is a digital marketing expert who writes about careers, education, ed. tech, and life hacks.

Keeping Tractors Cool

Keeping Tractors Cool Keeping Tractors Cool Keeping Tractors CoolOne critical engineering difference between farm tractors and over-the-road semi tractors is their speed. Eighteen-wheelers zip along open roads at 65 mph or better. A farm tractors usual plowing speed is about 4 mph, so keeping farm tractors cool is a major task. This big speed differential has big heat-transfer implications. Very little air flows naturally under the hood. Farm tractor designers have always had cooling problems. Those are compounded by farm tractors comparatively small engine compartments. Large, turbocharged diesel farm tractors have up to five under-hood cooling systems one each for the engine, the fuel, the transmission oil, the air compressor, and the cabin air conditioning. New emissions regulations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have created additional cooling challenges.Farm tractors rely almost entirely on one big fan to drive off all that welcheste heat. Making sure it work s efficiently has always been a tedious task. The under-hood components often were juggled to optimize airflows against the fans appetites for engine power and fuel. That forced manufacturer Case New Holland (CNH), Burr Ridge, IL, to build and test a prototype for each arrangement. There was never enough time or budget to optimize a design.Until very recently, engineers at CNH used hand and spreadsheet calculations. Those were verified, to one degree or another, by physical prototypes. And that was a problem.Automating CalculationsCNH solved the problem by automating heat-transfer calculations with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software supplied by Fluent, Inc., Lebanon, NH. CNH engineers and managers in Burr Ridge say the Fluent package was chosen because its software accurately simulated extremely complicated cooling packages while keeping computational requirements to reasonable levels. Fluent is a unit of ANSYS, Inc., Canonsburg, PA, a developer of engineering simulation an d analysis software. CNH is a unit of CNH Global N.V. in The Netherlands, and is majority owned by Fiat Industrial S.p.A. in Italy.CNH engineers now model and simulate the flow of air from the fan through the engine compartment and through the heat exchangers used in each of the modules. In the companys new Magnum tractors, the fans power consumption was significantly reduced. CFD made it possible to evaluate enough eignung designs, and several alternatives, to optimize the design. Also reduced were the costs of building and testing prototypes. Fluents software predicted the performance of the proposed designs.Verifying CalculationsThis was the big change. The old calculations had been verified only in a lab and not under the hood, where the fans behave differently. CNHs old methods also were unable to take into account the geometry of the under-hood compartment and didnt show how the air actually flowed, and that uncertainty made the prototypes necessary.CFD inputs included the geo metry of the tractors diesel engines, fans, heat exchangers and other components, and engine compartment sheet metal. The CFD-driven modifications on the Magnums included improved fan designs that draw much less power as well as new oil coolers.Coolant temperatures predicted by the simulation correlated well with measured temperatures. The CFD models had 5 million to 10 million elements and it took 24 to 48hours to run the simulation. These results were considered excellent because they approximated the variability of physical testing. The use of simulation in the design process made it possible to bring the product to market substantially faster than the previous generation of products.Adapted from Efficiency for the Field, by Panos Tamamidis, CFD manager, Case New Holland, for Mechanical Engineering, April 2007.CFD made it possible to evaluate enough potential designs, and several alternatives, to optimize the design.

Benefits of HSA vs. HRA for Health Care Savings

Benefits of HSA vs. HRA for Health Care SavingsBenefits of HSA vs. HRA for Health Care SavingsHealth insurance is designed to help with the cost of medical care, but it doesnt always cover everything. Planning ahead for additional out-of-pocket costs can keep you from experiencing sticker shock when a medical bill arrives. Depending on what type of health insurance you have or what health care benefits your employer offers, you may have access to a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Health Reimbursement Arsortimentment (HRA). If either of ansicht options are available to you, its important to understand how an HSA vs. HRA compares. Health Savings Account Basics As the name suggests, an HSA is a savings account thats meant to be used specifically for health care. These accounts are associated with high deductible health insurance plans, which may be offered by your employer. You can also opt to enroll in a high deductible plan with an HSA if youre self-employed. An HSA can be used to pay for a broad range of medical expenses, including Doctor visitsPreventative careSpecialty servicesPhysical therapyDrug and alcohol treatment programsWeight-loss programsOrgan transplantsLab testsMedical equipment and suppliesHospital servicesDental servicesVision servicesPrescription drugsOver-the-counter medications The Internal Revenue Service limits how HSA funds can be used to a degree. For instance, you cant use the money in your HSA to pay for things like teeth whitening services, vitamins, hair transplants, exercise equipment or a gym membership. Using your HSA funds is relatively easy. Your insurance company can provide you with a debit card linked to your savings account. You can then swipe your card to pay for eligible medical costs and your HSA provider will furnish a tax statement at the end of the year, showing your total spending and annual contributions. For 2018, you can contribute $3,450 to an HSA if you have single coverage. The limit increases to $6,900 if y ou have family coverage. Employers can make matching contributions to an HSA on your behalf. Total employee and employer contributions cant exceed the annual contribution limit. How a Health Reimbursement Arrangement Works A Health Reimbursement Arrangement differs from an HRA in several key ways. First, its not a savings account per se, nor is it health insurance. You dont make any contributions to the account instead, your employer makes contributions for you. Employers can establish an HRA for any employee under age 65. They also have control over how you can spend down the money in your account. For example, if you medical expenses that insurance doesnt pay for, you could tap your HRA to pay, then cover any remaining difference yourself. Alternately, your employer may set up your plan so that you cover a specific amount thats not covered by insurance then, your HRA pays the rest. In terms of contribution limits, these vary based on the type of HRA the employer has establishe d. An Integrated HRA which is linked to a high deductible group health plan, for instance, has no annual contribution limit. A Qualified Small Employer HRA (QSEHRA), which is designed for businesses with 50 or fewer employees, has a contribution limit of $5,050 for individual coverage and $10,250 for family coverage in 2018. Similar to HSAs, money held in an HRA can only be used for qualified medical expenses. Generally, that includes those expenses covered by your health insurance plan, such as doctor visits, hospital services and prescription drugs. Your employer has the option to expand the scope of coverage to include the full range of expenses that are HSA-eligible, but this isnt mandatory. Benefits of HSAs vs. HRAs An HSA and HRA may seem equally advantageous but HSAs yield some important benefits that HRAs dont. First, the contributions you make are tax-deductible. Deductions reduce your taxable income for the year, which could result in a lower tax bill or a larger refun d. HRA contributions are deductible but only for your employer you get no tax break for having one of these accounts. Next, youre not required to use your HSA funds until you need them. The money you contribute rolls over from year to year and until you withdraw it, it continues to earn interest. With an HRA, your employer decides whether to let you carry contributions over from one year to the next. If thats not an option, your HRA money essentially becomes use-it-or-lose-it. The way you can use funds in an HSA vs. HRA also differs. If your employer doesnt opt to go beyond the expenses covered by your health care plan, you may find yourself paying more out-of-pocket for medical expenses that could be covered by an HSA. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, an HSA can do double-duty as a retirement planning tool. Ordinarily, withdrawals from an HSA for anything other than health care would be subject to a 20 percent tax penalty and ordinary income tax. If you stay healthy and contin ue to accumulate money in your account during your working years, you can withdraw money from your HSA at age 65 or older for any purpose, without incurring the 20 percent penalty. Youd totenstill owe ordinary income tax on your withdrawal but this can be a useful way to supplement Social Security benefits or retirement income from a 401(k) or individual retirement account. Contributing to an HSA, even if you dont max out your plan each year, could be useful in creating an additional source of savings for retirement. If, however, you only have an HRA available, its important to understand exactly how you can use it to ensure that you make the most of it.
