Career Experts Share Their Top Tips For Job Hunting

Career Experts Share Their Top Tips For Job Hunting In today’s dog-eat-dog world, where the competition is high and the stakes are even higher, landing a decent, well-paying job may be the only thing that would keep you afloat. But we all know that it is easier said than done. Job hunting is a job in itself. However, knowing how to optimize your search for a job can really do wonders in terms of results and even in terms of stress management. The typical process of job hunting looks something like this: apply for as many jobs as you can put your resume up on networking websites like LinkedIn prepare for and try to ace any interview that comes your way sit back and wait for a call from a potential employer As important as all these steps are in helping you secure a job, they lack a certain edge that you will actually need in today’s ever-so-competitive job market. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t mean that you should abandon this approach altogether. It simply means that you have to supplement these efforts with additional things that will make you seem extremely appealing to prospective employers. Here are some tips from people who made it big in the job market: Find Your Niche , COO and VP of Hunter Construction, Pompano Beach, Florida, says that finding your niche is probably the most important tip for job hunting. Some people know exactly what they want to do and what they expect from their jobs. But not everyone can be so sure (or so lucky). For some, finding one’s forte can turn out to be quite the challenge. But according to Rosenof, once you do, job hunting can become a walk in the park! Migrate Your Skill Set It is not unheard of to consider multiple career choices while job hunting, says an article on the Porter and Chester Institute website. However, Michael Neece, the Chief Strategy Officer at PongoResume, said in an interview, “It’s also possible to rejuvenate your career prospects by changing departments rather than changing employers or industries.” Though career change may be a good option for some people, others may not be able to afford it. With the right career guidance, it is possible to hone your skills and apply for jobs in other departments rather than to switch jobs or careers altogether. This way you don’t have to start from scratch, you don’t lose time and you don’t have to take a course in something completely new. Take Social Networking Seriously Rick Joers, formerly the VP (Human Resources) at JP Morgan, found himself unemployed at the age of 58. With a limited pool of career opportunities, Joers said that he had never had to actively search for employment before and so this time he felt like he had to start from scratch. Realizing that his professional network was tapped out, he turned to LinkedIn. “I met a lot of people through LinkedIn and talked to them about moving into technology,” says Joers. He ended up finding a woman who used to be a consultant for JP Morgan on LinkedIn. He wrote to her to let her know he was applying for a position in her company. “Since she was the most influential decision maker, it was helpful to have someone who knew me.” Joers is now a Technical Partner at Royal Bank of Scotland. Don’t Let the Job Hunt Pull You Down Kevin Skinner, a Doctor of Psychology, says that when you lose your job, you tend to question your own identity. But it is important not to allow these layoffs to get in your way. Skinner proposes that the best way to prevent this from happening is to focus on finding solutions rather than beating yourself up or feeling guilty about losing your job. We all know how stressful job hunting can become. Making an important career choice can also sometimes mean taking a step backing and focusing on your physical and emotional health. Exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy diet and keeping a good sleep schedule are some obvious things that everyone can do. However, some things that you probably didn’t know you should be doing are: Finding volunteer work in your community â€" doing something productive will give you a sense of purpose in life and will help you feel valued. Avoid binge eating and drinking excessively â€" self-pity only leads to self-destruction! Limit your exposure to television and internet â€" sitting passively while soaking in negative information is not the best way to go about getting back on your feet. Optimizing your job search means having to consider all the factors and not just the physical act of job hunting. Considering multiple options, finding your place, being mentally prepared for a career change and of course, taking good care o your health will definitely contribute to a better and more fruitful job search. Writing Resume Writing Tips For Entering Workforce

Writing Resume Writing Tips For Entering WorkforceAs job seekers enter the workforce, resume writing may be one of the last things on their mind. While most people are not at a point where they are ready to quit their jobs yet, there are some that are in need of career help. The first step in preparing for writing resumes is to gather all of your available writing resources. This could include books, journals, magazines, or personal references. After reading, you can start compiling a basic outline of your career goals and discuss the material with family and friends who may have knowledge about relevant careers.Once you have established a sense of your specific skills, you can move onto creating your resume. Make sure that you add as much detail as possible to each section. For example, if you are seeking a new position, include your years of experience, education, educational background, awards and certifications. Even if you do not have a degree, you should include information such as how you attended college, how long you attended, any training you received in the classroom, as well as your present employment history. You should also provide some extra information. An example would be where you would like to work, how long you intend to work, what the job will entail, or even if you are only interested in becoming part-time or temporary workers. If you already have a short list of companies, include them on your resume. Finally, if you have a list of potential employers, list them in order of preference. Keep in mind that your resume should speak directly to the company's needs. For example, if you are hoping to land a position as a part-time worker, put the employer's needs first, listing the jobs that fit that description before listing your own preferences. When writing your resume, you will be required to create a cover letter. Once again, this is something that you will want to research before hand, particularly if you are submitting multiple copies. Also, make sure that you follow specific guidelines.Use each resume as a way to begin working toward the same goal: getting hired for a job that best suits your qualifications. Never submit the same resume more than once; instead, use each resume as an opportunity to talk about what you can offer the employer. Many other resume writing tips exist, but for the time being, the basics can be summarized as follows: research your strengths and weaknesses, gather your resume materials and create a professional resume. Start by writing your resume today.

Beat the odds with these job search strategies - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Beat the odds with these job search strategies The majority of clients I speak to as a recruiter and interview coach use online job boards as their primary source of finding opportunities. However, according to many sources, less than 20-30% of hires come from job boards. Applying to hundreds of jobs online isnt the best option to get hired so why do we spend so much time doing that? Of course, applying for jobs online is less scary than networking.  But to beat the odds when youre job searching, you shouldnt spend more than 20%-30% of your time responding to job postings.  You should also make sure your  resume is strong  and that your  LinkedIn profile  is engaging and easy to find. You need to spend the remaining time building a robust network that can help you find a job which might not be advertised on any job board. Here are my top tips on how to beat the odds when youre job searching: Create a List of Target Companies Its easier to get hired when you know which companies are hiring, so find out where your potential employers are by reading job boards as well as industry news, business journals and company websites. Once youve created a  list of targeted companies  where you want to work, check their job sites weekly. Also talk to your network and search LinkedIn to find people who are currently working, or worked in the past, at each of your targeted companies. Connect With Decision-Makers and Recruiters Lets assume youve found the ideal job on a job board. You might be tempted to apply immediately, but before you do that, go to the companys career site and check the job out.  Can you find out who the hiring manager is? If so,  try to connect with them on LinkedIn. If you dont have any mutual connections, you can always join one of the groups the hiring manager belongs to. Joining a group will allow you to engage in a conversation with anyone belonging to the group. You can also Google the name and reach out to them on Twitter, Google+ or their blog. Your short invitation to connect should evoke their interest. One of the ways you can do it is to reference a shared interest or comment on something in their profile or status update. You want to come across as interesting and likable not a desperate job seeker. Ask for Information Not a Job Id strongly advise that you dont just jump to asking for their help in getting the job. Before a stranger is willing to help you, they have to know you and trust you. A genuine compliment on something theyve done professionally might go a long way, and asking for advice on the industry or a company should also be well received. Dont try to be clever by sending your resume to a name if that name doesnt know you. If you want to get hired, first get referred by someone the manager trusts. You can also find people who know the manager.  Talk to them first. Help them vet you, so theyll want to refer you to their friend the manager.  Ask everyone you know if they know a person at the company you have targeted. If they dont, ask them if they know someone who might. Increase Your Chances By 40% Get Referred As  the New York Times reported: Even getting in the door for an interview is becoming more difficult for those without connections. Referred candidates are twice as likely to land an interview as other applicants, according to a new study of one large company by three economists from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.  For those who make it to the interview stage, the referred candidates had a 40 percent better chance of being hired than other applicants. Let your contacts within your target companies know what jobs you are interested in and keep your fingers crossed that your contact is willing to be a referral. You want to make them feel like they helped you, so dont forget to send them a thank you note and keep them in the loop about your candidacy. Keep Improving Your Skills Depending on the type of a job you’re looking for or if you’re looking to change industries, you need to make sure your skills and qualifications are up to scratch. At Yieldify, learning is one of our core values, so  during the interview process, we always ask candidates what they’ve learnt recently or how they’ve improved their skills. Learning new skills doesn’t have to be hard. There are many evening courses and schools and universities offering online or distance learning, e.g.  Wilhelm Büchner University which is designed for working professionals. In Summary Dont rely on job boards, keep improving your skills, talk to as many people as possible; and give your contacts some credible reasons to see you as an insider, which will improve your odds of having someone pay attention to your application. If you need some help with getting more interviews or/and improving your interview technique, check out my interview coaching services or my Career Acceleration Plan.

Following Sochi Olympics is Like Watching a Bad Interview Unfold

Following Sochi Olympics is Like Watching a Bad Interview Unfold Ive been hooked on the #SochiProblems hashtag on Twitter where journalists and athletes are tweeting about mishaps related to the Olympics including the malfunctions during the opening ceremonys light show, unfinished buildings, trashed hotel rooms, unusual bathroom layouts, stray dogs, potholes, and crumbling sidewalks.Ok, we’re all human and we all make mistakes. But in some situations you are going to be judged more harshly than others. If a toilet seat in a hotel room bathroom is put on backwards under normal circumstances, you might have a chuckle and that would be the end of it. But when you are at an event as special as the Olympics being hosted in a a city that has had years to prepare for the event, you may become more frustrated by such a mishap.  And even if the hotel has provided excellent accommodations to every other guest in that hotel, the person who had that experience will always associate that hotel with poor accommodations.Job search is a situation where your a ctions are under a microscope. Errors that might be passed over in your day to day work are scrutinized much more diligently when hiring managers are reviewing applicants. When you start the job search process, an employer doesn’t know you and they don’t trust you yet. They don’t know if you are competent to do the job so each of your interactions with them either builds that trust or destroys it. Here are a few errors that job seekers often make and are frequently judged by.Resume typos…It’s very rare that I receive an email without a typo. And I see typos on websites and blogs all the time. And it doesn’t really color my opinion of that person. But in job search, typos on the resume make a red flag go up for many hiring managers. The concern is that if the applicant wasn’t detail-oriented enough to catch the typos in their resume, they may make other, more costly errors for the company.Fashion Faux-pas…Everyone has showed up at work at some point in time in some ou tfit that was far from flattering, too casual, inconsistent with the company’s corporate culture, or even offensive. In most cases the fashion faux-pas becomes fodder for the water cooler for a day or two and then just goes away. But on an interview, the candidate quickly turns into “the applicant in the fishnet stockings” or “the guy with the really bad tie” and again a judgement is passed. The concern is that based on the applicant’s dress they won’t fit in with the company’s culture or perhaps lack sound judgement in other areas.Arriving late to the interview… Just about everyone has been late to work at one time or another. And unless it becomes a chronic issue, it is generally accepted and not a big deal. But on an interview, arriving late can signal to a hiring manager that you are not reliable or dependable or that you don’t manage your time well.Electronic whoops…We’ve all been in situations where someone’s cell phone rings during a presentation or important meeting. And maybe it’s a bit embarrassing but it’s quickly forgotten. However, if your phone rings during an interview, the interviewer notices and may pass a judgement about you or even your consideration of others. When you apply for a job, you are a lot like the host country for the Olympics. Everything you do is obvious. Everything you do gets noticed. And little errors in your job search strategy can quickly turn into detrimental ones. The people working on anything related to the Olympics should have checked and double checked their work…because it’s the Olympics and people all over the world are watching. Job seekers need to check and recheck all the little details that go into an effective job search…because it’s your career. Both are really big things that you don’t want to screw up.

How to Master Online Executive Job Hunting

How to Master Online Executive Job Hunting An executive resume service can help you search online. While the job market is improving, it can still be difficult to land the job you want, winning out over many other candidates. Searching online can be one of the best ways to locate jobs for which you are qualified and even start the application process. Before you start looking, however, it’s important to work with an  executive resume writing service  and an executive resume writer to ensure your resume is ready for your online job hunt. Use Keywords in Your Resume One of the first things your executive resume service should tell you is to choose your keywords carefully. Today’s businesses often plug resumes into a computer to determine whether candidates have used keywords that match the requirements of the job. Because job listings often generate a large number of responses, it’s essential to make it easy for those responsible for making hiring decisions to determine whether you are the perfect fit. Don’t Rely Solely on Your Resume Hiring an  executive resume writer  is important to ensure your executive resume is ready for sending to companies. However, you shouldn’t rely solely on posting your resume online to conduct your job search. While it’s still important to have a resume, more businesses are looking for individuals who think outside the box and submit something that stands out in order to apply for the job. Before you take this step, it’s important to make sure you understand company culture to ensure it’s an acceptable option. Ask Around for Referrals Many jobs are earned based on referrals from existing employees within the company. If you’re in the market for a job, one of the best ways to get your foot in the door is to find someone who can refer you. If you don’t have a friend or family member who already works there, attempt to make connections through LinkedIn and other social media sites. While these connections may not produce immediate results, they can be valuable tools in the future. Stalk Your Dream Job You don’t have to be connected to get the job of your dreams if you’re persistent about it. Once you find the job you want, reach out to the human resources department at the company and let them know directly you are interested in the job. You can also request an information interview so you can learn more about what’s required and show interest in the job. Seeking a job online may seem easy, but there’s a lot of work that must be done to help you land the job of your dreams. Hiring an  executive resume service  to help you create an effective resume is just part of the process. These tips can help you make a great impression on prospective employers and increase the chances you will get the job you want.
